Everybody quotes the peak. The peak is the least useful number there is.

An air-activated hand warmer is iron powder oxidising slowly inside a breathable pouch. How hot it gets and how long it lasts are the same budget spent two different ways: a warmer that peaks impressively in the first ten minutes has burned through iron it needed at three o’clock.
So every product on this site is quoted in hours at an average temperature, and none of them are quoted by their maximum. It is a less flattering number and it is the one that decides whether a giveaway is remembered fondly or thrown away at half time.
The other number nobody mentions is the outer sachet. It is an oxygen barrier holding the reaction off, which means a weak seal is stock quietly spending itself in a warehouse. The print sits on that barrier film, so the packaging and the shelf life are the same decision.

This category is sold on peak temperature and bought by people standing in the cold, which is a bad combination for everyone except the supplier.
We publish duration, we say plainly which product suits which problem, and we will talk a buyer out of the wrong one — a hand warmer in a boot underperforms because there is almost no air in there, and reusable click warmers run for under an hour whatever the listing says.

On safety, plainly
Warmers belong in a glove, a pocket, on a sock or over a base layer — not against bare skin for hours. Low-temperature burns happen well below the temperature people assume is dangerous, which is why body patches are designed slow and cool rather than hot.
Anyone with reduced sensation, including diabetic neuropathy, should take medical advice before using warmers at all, and nobody should fall asleep wearing one. We print that on the pack because it is true, not because a form told us to.
